*One for reality*

Why do we smile in pictures? Why don't we cry or frown or show other emotions besides happiness when our photographs are being taken? The 100-million-dollar question. Simply: why?

Are we so afraid of letting our real and truer emotions shine through? Are we afraid of letting people know how vulnerable we are if we don't smile? Or does picture-taking only requires it to be so during happy moments?

Why is it that we take pictures and exclaim "marha marha" when babies are born? During birthdays and weddings? In contrast, you don't see anyone clicking away at a funeral or a wake, unless he/she is a reporter/journalist. It's seldom and very rare to have people taking shots of unhappiness right in the face, with the subjects themselves knowing what is taking place at the moment. Even when photojournalists take so-called "artistic" shots, the subjects are either unaware of their own true emotions being captured on camera, or they stop whatever work they're doing and gamely, genuinely, pose for a picture.

I've never had my picture taken when I'm crying or fuming but one fine day, I hope I get to see myself in a non-happy picture.
